Jeannette Vaught Stabler, Mother of Eight (1919-2009)

Jeannette Vaught Stabler of Columbia, Maryland, passed away on Friday, December 4, 2009 at the age of 90. A long-time resident of Montgomery County, she moved to Columbia from Leisure World in 2008, and formerly resided in Rockville, Gaithersburg, Brookeville and Brighton.

Born Cecelia Jeannette Vaught on May 20, 1919, in Chicago, Illinois, she was one of four children of Irene Margaret Cullison and William Jordan Vaught. She was the last surviving member of her family. She was preceded in death by one sister, Valerie V. Pierce of Michigan, and two brothers, William J. Vaught of Florida and Daniel Vaught of University Park, Maryland.

Jeannette married Sydney Snowden Stabler, Jr. in Alexandria, Virginia on December 26, 1941. They were married for 30 years until his passing in 1971. She is survived by eight children: William Snowden Stabler of Silver Spring, Maryland; Peggy (and her husband Francis) Johnson of Boyds, Maryland; Mark (and his wife Patty) Stabler of Nuevo, California; Irene (and her husband Thomas) Bennetts of Germantown, Maryland; Isabel (and her husband Robert) Goodier of Lutherville, Maryland; Edward (and his wife Janis) Stabler of Vienna, Virginia; Andrew Graham (and his wife Jenny) Stabler of Yorba Linda, California; Paul David (and his wife Mary) Stabler of Gaithersburg, Maryland; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ellen Stabler Hewitt of Colorado; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A 1967 graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, Jeannette subsequently worked as secretary to the Director of the University of Maryland Speech and Hearing Department at the College Park Campus. She also was an administrative assistant for the Montgomery County Government Department of Personnel, the Montgomery County Police Department, the Montgomery County Social Services Department, the Rockville Chamber of Commerce, and Montgomery College in the offices of the Science Department, the English Department and the Department of Continuing Education at the Rockville Campus.

Jeannette was the Organist and Choir Director for several Episcopal churches in Maryland over the years, including Saint Bartholomew’s in Laytonsville, Saint John’s in Olney, Saint Luke’s in Brighton, Saint Andrew’s in College Park and Christ Episcopal Church in Rockville. Following her move to Leisure World in 1996, she was an active member of the Inter-Faith Chapel Choir, a member of the Chapel Council and publicity chair.

Jeannette was a life-long member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and P.E.O. International. She joined P.E.O. in 1945 and served as president of Chapter D. She was a member and past president of the Business and Professional Women (BPW) of Rockville and Montgomery County. She was also a member of the Rockville Women's Club, a volunteer docent at Glenview Mansion at the Rockville Civic Center and a volunteer at the Sandy Spring Museum. She served as a Montgomery County election judge from 1964 to 2008.

After retiring from her work at Montgomery College and moving to Leisure World in 1996, Jeannette became active in the Inter-Faith Chapel, Questors and Kiwanis International. She joined the Kiwanis Club of Rossmoor, Silver Spring, Maryland in 1996, was elected for three terms as Club President (in 1999, 2005 and 2006), and was honored as a Distinguished Club President and Kiwanian of the Year. She joined the Kiwanis Club of Wheaton-Silver Spring in October 2007.

Of all her careers, Jeannette said her favorite was “Mother of Eight” children. When the Stabler Family moved to a three-acre “farm” in Brookeville in the late 1950s, the population of the small upper Montgomery County village increased by ten percent. The animal population of Brookeville also increased substantially with the family’s addition of a cow and a calf, a goat and a kid, three Irish Setters and a litter of ten puppies, several cats, a few chickens and an occasional pet mouse, turtle or snake!

She was the wife of late Sydney Stabler, Jr. Mrs. Stabler held a BS degree in Education from University of MD. She worked as secretary and administrative assistant in various Montgomery County offices, and at University of MD. and Montgomery College. She was a docent at Glenview Mansion at Rockville Civic Center and a Sandy Spring Museum volunteer. She belonged to Rockville Women''s Club, B.P.W., D.A.R., P.E.O., and Kiwanis. She served as election judge for Montgomery County Board of Elections, organist/choir director at St. Bartholomew''s Church in Laytonsville, and choir member at Interfaith Chapel in Leisure World. Survivors include children William Stabler (Silver Spring), Peggy Johnson (Boyds), Mark Stabler (CA), Irene Bennetts (Germantown), Isabel Goodier (Lutherville), Edward Stabler (VA), Andrew Stabler (CA), Paul Stabler (Gaithersburg),16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
